One of my favorite things about sewing is you never really stop learning. There are always new techniques, fabric, and equipment to learn. And with every new thing we learn, we have the ability to hone those skills to get better. Sewing, no matter what the type, is a challenge.
But are you up for a new challenge?
I was perusing the web and came across the Me-Made-May ’14 challenge. This is the 5th year for the challenge that encourages people who sew/knit/crochet/refashion/upcycle garments to WEAR them! It’s one thing to sew what you love, but how good are you at actually wearing these items and incorporating them into your wardrobe.
Are you not particularly good at challenges? No worries there. This challenge is customized by … you. That’s the best type of challenge! The key is to know your wardrobe, know what you’re capable of, and commit to it. For example, one of the most popular pledges for Me-Made-May is to wear one self-stitched or refashioned garment each day for the whole month of May. Anyone that has been sewing for a number of years could have more than enough to wear every day for a month. This also includes accessories like headbands, purses and lingerie.
If I took that particular pledge I’d have to be a little insane. I don’t have enough hand sewn garments to wear every day for a week, much less a whole month. 🙂 But if I look at the garments I’ve already sewn and what I’m planning to sew in the coming weeks including the garments I’d like to sew during the month of May, I think I can make the following pledge.
“I sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May ’14. I endeavor to wear a handmade garment or accessory twice per week for the duration of May 2014.”
I still have a week to finalize my pledge, but this is definitely something I want to be a part of.
